Our favorite summer fitness tips

Summer is a good time to get in some outdoor workouts to hit your diet and fitness goals. However, it's also a great time to vacation, relax, and break the rules a little bit. Our favorite summer fitness tips encompass all of the above.

You don't need a personal trainer, fancy gym equipment, or to become a member of a fitness center to complete a well balanced fitness routine this summer. You may not even need a single piece of equipment! Your body weight alone can suffice when it comes to summer workouts.

Outdoor fitness is one of the best ways to exercise because you are getting fresh air and feeling the natural world around you. That said, hot weather can really take a toll on your body and you should be cautious of sun exposure and heat exhaustion.

Start with the right gym clothes. Try to wear clothes that won't trap in heat or cause you to sweat excessively. There are certain shirts that can be worn specifically to beat the summer heat when doing outdoor exercise.

Holistic, healthy living also requires balance. So, after an intense workout or outdoor exercise session, it's important to allow your body the time to cool down and relax. Stretching and breathing after a workout lowers your heart rate, body temperature, and brings your body back to homeostasis. This is when you get that real nice rush of endorphins, too!

This summer season we want you to feel equipment, inspired, and enabled to exercise outdoors using whatever fitness amenities you already have in your workout space. That way you can come up with your own personalized workout plan that you will still to and enjoy!

Our Favorite Summer Fitness Tips 

  1. Stay hydrated

    Drink water. A lot of it. When you're working out, especially outside in the summer heat, you need to replace the water you are losing from sweat to maintain hydration. If you notice yourself experiencing extreme thirst, it may be time to slow down.

    On this same subject, make sure you're hydrating your skin and protecting it from summer heat rays. Exercising outside is supposed to increase your health, so you want to make sure you're not harming your largest organ!

  2. Start small and work your way up
    You don't have to start with an intense workout plan right away. In fact, if you're just starting out, this may deter you from sticking with it, which is the ultimate goal.

    A great place to start your summer fitness routine is to take a daily walk. Our bodies were designed to walk long distances, so it should be a lower effort daily movement. If you're finding this to be too challenging, it should be all the more motivation to stick with it until it becomes second nature.

  3. Utilize early mornings

    Finding time in the day to pull away from responsibilities and actually work on ourselves can be pretty challenging. One tip to take away with you is to plan your workouts for early mornings before the day begins. It can be hard at first to wake up, but after a week or two, your body will be used to waking up for an exercise session.

  4. Listen to your body

    The most important aspect in holistic health is to listen to what your body needs. Getting in tune with ourselves can take time, so don't get discouraged. Just try to notice when you're feeling sore, tired, overheated, etc.

    Your body will tell you what it needs and some days it's harder to push through than others. On those days, it's ok to take it easy and get back to it the next day. Allow yourself the permission to have down time.

  5. Eat healthy

    Your diet is going to fuel your workouts. That said, you should eat a healthy, well balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables, healthy fat and carbohydrates to power your systems and keep you strong.

    Stock up on healthy snacks, energy bars, seasonal fruits, and of course green leafy vegetables!

  6. Stick to it

    This is easier said than done, but also the most important tip of the article. The longer you can stick to a fitness routine, the better you will feel, the longer you will live, and the more physical results you will see.

    Prioritize your physical activity so that it is not a burden, but something you look forward to each day. As your fitness level reaches new heights, you will find it easier and easier to stick to. It's just getting over that initial hump that can be hard. If you need to recruit a family member or friend to hold you accountable, buddy system accountability has certainly helped many people stay on track.

  7. Support your muscles & bones
    Your muscles and bones are what keeps you moving. As we age, unfortunately, their density levels decrease and we can become less mobile. Making the right food choices to support your muscles and bones, such as foods high in vitamin d, calcium, and magnesium, is a great first step to building a stronger frame.
