5 hydration hacks to help you drink more water

5 hydration hacks to help you drink more water

When it comes to staying hydrated in the colder months, it’s especially important to remind yourself to drink water. When you aren’t sweating as much or overheating, it can be harder to remember to hydrate.

Staying hydrated is one of the most important components of good health. In fact, dehydration can lead to a number of health concerns including:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Dry mouth, lips, eyes
  • Nausea
  • Irregular urination
  • Constipation

Even knowing this it can be hard to reach the recommended amount of water per day. Studies on how much water we need each day tend to fluctuate depending on certain factors, however, according to the Mayo Clinic men need about 3.7 liters of water each day while women need about 2.7 liters.

Have you ever seen those giant water bottles with markings on them encouraging you to drink each hour? These are great tools for anyone who is looking to improve their water intake. Sometimes the hardest part of staying hydrated is just remembering you need to drink even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Let’s go through some of our other favorite ways to hack into hydration so we can work on preventing dehydration this fall and winter.

5 Hydration Hacks to Help You Drink More Water

  • Eat water-based food
  • If you're finding it hard to physically get down water, you can always turn to water-based food for an extra boost of hydration. Water-based foods are obviously going to be mostly fruits and vegetables which also constrain necessary vitamins and minerals that boost your overall health. More times than none, if you think it’s a water-based food, it probably is. Examples of water-based foods include:

    • Cucumber
    • Watermelon
    • Peaches
    • Celery
    • Lettuce
    • Apples
  • Bring a reusable water bottle wherever you go
  • As mentioned above, there are plenty of water bottles on the market that will actually tell you how much water you’re consuming. Some contain the daily amount of water so you only have to fill it up once. Not only does it help your hydration to have a water bottle on hand, but it is better for the environment.

  • Drink a glass of water before bed and first thing in the morning
  • If you have an overactive bladder, this might not be the best advice for you. However, most people forget to drink water first thing in the morning which can be harmful to the gut microbiome - especially if you like to have coffee first thing!

Drinking water before bed may help dehydration throughout the night. Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night so thirsty that you can’t go back to sleep? Drinking a full glass of water before bed might just be the answer you’re looking for. Not only that, but you will wake up feeling more refreshed.

  • Use a hydration supplement powder
  • Hydration powders have been taking the wellness world by storm because it has     become increasingly important to stay hydrated in order to achieve good health. So many of the processed foods we eat and other sugary or alcoholic beverages can leave our bodies in a place of dehydration.

If you like to indulge in a cocktail, beer, or glass of wine every now and then, you’ve probably experienced the feeling of extreme thirst either hours later or the next day. Hydration supplement powders typically contain necessary vitamins and minerals and electrolytes to boost your hydration levels faster than a typical glass of water would. Mix one of these into a glass of water and let the hydration begin!

  • Set a reminder to drink a glass of water every hour
  • It may seem silly at first, but setting a reminder on your phone to alarm you to drink a glass of water periodically throughout the day can significantly improve your hydration. As we’ve discussed, remembering to drink water can be the hardest part of staying properly hydrated, so this tip will do the hard part for you. Better yet, if you have a water bottle on hand, you don’t even need to find a glass to fill up!
